Is the Roman goddess Libertas’ stature at the pinnacle of the Capitol building manifesting a spirit of lawlessness over the Congress?

A Goddess on Top of the Capitol?

The suggestion of a goddess standing atop of the U.S. Capitol seems fictional. From a distance, it is hard to tell what it is, perhaps just a decorative spire. As you get close it begins to look like a woman in a robe with a bird on her head. But make no mistake, this statue is an idol; an Americanized depiction of the Roman goddess Libertas. And this goddess stands as the pinnacle of one of the most powerful lawmaking institutions in the world.

While the goddess Libertas is intended to represent freedom, her freedom presents a snare. For the moral, liberty thrives, but among the amoral, she becomes the freedom to do as one pleases as a gateway to sin.

Tragically, the founders of America’s institutions chose to place idols of her over some of the most important aspects of the country: its monetary system, its military, its entrance, and even its lawmaking body.

According to God’s law, idols and the gods they represent are not to be honored or worshipped. To God, idols are detestable, and he judges the nations that honor them.

So does this idol to a false goddess standing over the Congress, explain the dysfunction over the law-making body? And if so, what does that mean for the destiny of America?

The Statue of Freedom’s Roots in Libertas

While the Statue of Freedom may not look exactly like Libertas, Libertas is still her core image. Libertas and her Americanized version, Columbia, were already well-established icons for America for at least 90 years before the Statue of Freedom was completed.

The conceptual models for this statue were produced in Rome, where the goddess was first worshipped. These early concepts looked much like the traditional Roman Libertas. She wore the phrygian cap/pileus, a laurel wreath, and a Romanesque gown.

By the final version, the sculptor removed the traditional pileus. Secretary of War Jefferson Davis (who became the Confederacy President) dictated this change because of the cap’s association with freed slaves. He preferred a helmet reflecting triumph. The resulting helmet design is reminiscent of a Roman plumed galea combined with a Native American headdress.

The Warrior Goddesses Inside the Capitol

As with the Statue of Liberty, the sculpture fused the features of other gods onto the Statue of Freedom, heightening her status. Historian Vivien Green Fryd noted that the sword, shield, plumed helmet, and cloak evoke the Roman goddess Minerva. Minerva was the Roman goddess of war and the city and protector of civilized life (among other things).

The fresco painted on the interior of the Capitol rotunda displays this warrior version of the goddess. Like the statue, this fresco was sourced in Rome, painted by Constantino Brumidi, a painter with an Italian/Greek heritage. The fresco shows this enhanced goddess triumphing over tyranny surrounded by seven other Roman gods and goddesses.

The U.S. Capitol Visitor Center describes her as “Armored Freedom, sword raised and cape flying, with a helmet and shield reminiscent of those on the Statue of Freedom, tramples Tyranny and Kingly Power.

But does the Libertas spirit rebel against only tyrannical authority or against all authority? And does her trampling of “Kingly Power” include the King of Kings, Jesus Christ?

Libertas’ Ties to the Antichrist Spirit

Before I answer that, let’s look further into Libertas’ nature.

The word liberal comes from the same Latin base as Libertas. And we can see that like Libertas, the word liberal has dual connotations. When it was first used around 14-16 A.D., on the positive side it meant free or generous, but in a bad sense, it meant unrestrained in speech or action. This trait is reminiscent of the little horn, the Antichrist, as described three times in Daniel 7 as uttering great boasts.

Interestingly, there are a number of writings examining the role of Libertas in the late Roman republic, including its fall. For those who exploited Libertas for their political objectives, scholars have noted how she became doing as one likes. This spirit manifested in selfish intentions and the consolidation of power away from the people.

Those familiar with Daniel 11 know that doing as one pleases is also a key trait of the antichrist spirit, a spirit associated with lawlessness (2 Thessalonians 2).

We read about Congress members exhibiting these traits every day, which makes me wonder if the Libertas idols have ushered in the antichrist spirit, a spirit of lawlessness into the Congress?

Libertas in the Congress

Libertas - goddess of the Capitol

There is an unusual fact about Libertas in the Capitol – there are three representations of her. And remarkably, they seem to form a trinity that mimics the Holy Trinity. Libertas is enthroned upon the pinnacle of the Capitol, much as the Father sits as the head of the Trinity. She is also pictured in the fresco holding a symbol for dominion, seated at the right hand of the deified version of the father of the country, George Washington, just as Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father. Lastly, she is pictured on the earth defeating foes with her cape flying reminiscent of the Holy Spirit on the earth, empowering believers to overcome.

This leads me to ask, has Libertas supplanted God in the Capitol? In trampling “Kingly Power” is she trying to trample the King of Kings, Jesus Christ in Congress?

The current liberal-majority Congress has been pursuing laws that directly contradict God’s law, as evidenced by the recent push for the Equality Act. This act places LGBTQ rights above religious freedom. It specifically states that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act “shall not provide … a basis for challenging the application of” any Equality Act provision.

Just last month, in opposition of the bill, Representative Greg Steube cited God’s law from Deuteronomy. In response, Representative Jerry Nadler stated, “what any religious tradition describes as God’s will is no concern of this Congress.

While Representative Nadler may foolishly lower the Bible to a religious tradition, it is far more, containing God’s law as given by Him. To Representative Nadler, and many other liberal congress members, God’s law has no place in America’s lawmaking. They deny Jesus Christ’s position in all governments and thus are against Christ, or anti-Christ.

Doing as they Please

In today’s Congress, any move is acceptable to achieve a party’s goals. Over the past few years, we have witnessed liberal congress members pursue flawed impeachment proceedings to oust a sitting President. We have also seen them berate a Supreme Court nominee in a circus atmosphere over unsubstantiated witness claims.

When a rule stands in the way of their objectives, they change the rule. The Republicans did this by lowering the number of votes needed to confirm a Supreme Court justice. And now, the Democrats are trying to get their way by expanding the Supreme Court from nine justices to thirteen to rebalance the court in their favor. At the same time, they are liberalizing voting laws and seeking D.C. statehood to consolidate power.

This is the spirit of doing as one pleases, the spirit of lawlessness, the antichrist spirit. And this spirit is running rampant in the Congress.

Is this is the repercussion of placing the Roman goddess Libertas over America’s lawmakers? And if so, what is yet to come?

Has Honoring Libertas Sealed America’s Destiny?

I wrote in the previous posts in this series that to an amoral people, the goddess Libertas becomes a gateway to other spirits. The U.S. Congress is now showing the traits of the antichrist spirit, which leads me to wonder who is really in control of the Congress.

If Libertas had a role in taking down Rome, has the U.S. sealed the same destiny for itself by honoring the same goddess?

As we near the end of this age, the antichrist spirit will rise and at the right time, be given authority over the earth. For his authority to rise, the authority of world powers such as the U.S. must fall. Are the events we are witnessing in Congress signs of a government in peril?

The Bible is clear that God punishes nations that worship idols. And there are signs that the U.S. is entering a time of judgment for its idol worship. In January, just three days after a representative invoked the Hindu god Brahma as the creator, the U.S. Capitol building was breached. (see Did the Breach of the Capitol Building Contain a Message from God?) If these events were related, judgment is surely upon Congress.

I will leave you with these questions. Has only Congress fallen, or does it simply represent the will of the people who elected its officials? And if so, is the Libertas spirit over Congress a symptom of the greater infection of Libertas over its society?

I will explore this in the next post.
