Democratic crises are spreading among the free world, presenting conditions leading to the rise of the beast of Revelation

What Will it Take for the Beast to Rise?

What will it take for an authoritarian power known as the Beast to control the world? The answer is in one word: crises. Crises cause the fall of governments and the rise of new ones. They cause confusion, division, and the opportunity for extremist factions to take power. And the Bible tells us exactly what these crises will be.

Revelation 6 details these crises and shows how heaven will initiate these events through the four horsemen. These crises will manifest through false christs (kings and priests), war, social upheaval, and the deadly trio of famine, pestilence, and violence. The crises will uproot governments, cause division, dissatisfaction, and dissension among the people, and bring calls for earthly salvation. But a liar will answer the calls; one who will promise relief, but demand power, obedience, and praise.

Democracies/republics stand as an obstacle to such authoritarian rule. The freedom of the people to elect their representatives is a powerful counterbalance to the consolidation of power. Authoritarians hate these freedoms.

So when we see governmental crises spreading in long-established democracies today, we must take note. These democracies must lose power to lead the way for the Beast to rise.

Democratic Crises in Israel

I will start with Israel. Israel is important to the whole world; through it, God will bless all the nations. Not only is Israel the sole democracy in the Middle East, but it is comprised of God’s chosen people in their promised land. While God has already fulfilled promises to Israel, He has even greater ones yet to come. These promises include Jesus the Messiah, ruling during a 1,000-year age of peace over the earth from Jerusalem.

Israel is at the center of God’s plans, so when we see crises in Israel, we can be sure to see similar crises throughout the globe.

Israel has a parliamentary democracy, in which the Prime Minister is the head of the party that holds the majority in the legislative branch called the Knesset. The Knesset has representatives of many parties, including parties with as little as 3.25% of the electoral vote. With such a dispersion of the vote, the larger parties must form coalitions with smaller parties to form a majority. Without a majority, no party may appoint a Prime Minister to form a government.

In 2021, after four elections failed to produce a clear majority, Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett barely formed a coalition to secure 61 of the 120 seats. After much infighting, two of the coalition members have now dissented, making the coalition ineffective in passing laws. Then a crisis arose.

A law allowing Israeli law to be applied to West Bank settlers was about to expire and needed a majority vote to renew it. Without a majority, Bennett and Lapid decided to disband the Knesset and called for new elections. This will be the fifth election in four years.

As in Israel, crises are arising throughout the free world.

Democratic Crises Around the World

The UK is also facing a crisis as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation last week. After a series of ethics scandals and resignations from 5 cabinet members and over 50 officials in his government.

The U.S. is also in crisis. Claims of voter fraud plagued the last election but were quickly squashed, I believe for fear of destabilizing confidence in the system.

But now, a new crisis is facing the U.S. over abortion. The crisis is not that the Supreme Court overturned Row v. Wade. The crisis is that many abortion advocates in Congress are willing to do whatever it takes to reestablish the liberal bias in the Supreme Court. This includes increasing the number of judges on the court so that the liberals can appoint new several new liberal judges; people such as Ketanji Brown Jackson, who has a history of placing the liberal agenda over the law and the constitution. The three branches of government form a balance of power, each keeping the other in check. But when the legislative branch moves to shift that balance to support their political agenda, that balance is torn apart.

There are many other examples of democracies in crisis across the world. Last summer, Afghanistan fell. Russia invaded Ukraine. In Japan, the former Prime Minister was recently assassinated. The citizens of Canada and many European democracies continue to be eroded in the name of woke ideologies.

Freedom is being taken from the world. These two infographics show the deterioration of freedom from 2020 to 2021.

In every region of the world, democracy is under attack by populist leaders and groups that reject pluralism and demand unchecked power to advance the particular interests of their supporters, usually at the expense of minorities and other perceived foes.

The Time is Coming

Our world is currently transitioning to a new age, and in preparation, democratic crises are springing up around the globe.

The four horsemen are on the earth, executing their assigned roles to bring the current powers to their knees. The white horse is the horseman of false christs. As Christ was king and priest, this horseman operates in both government and religious institutions. We can read how this horseman had a role in conquering Babylon (see this post), and he has a role in the crises appearing today.

Amid these crises, persecution will rise against believers, and some will shine and bring many to righteousness. In the backdrop of these turbulent times, a leader will begin to rise though he will not be discernable as the Antichrist.

As the Antichrist is revealed, Jesus will send angels to gather the believers before sending a major global catastrophe to the earth from the sky. It will be the final piece that breaks the spine of the old order. This will be the time of the beast and the brief era when God will grant him dominion over the earth.

So as we see the current world powers in turmoil, we must not despair but know the time is near. We must prepare our hearts, teach the gospel, and walk out God’s purpose in our daily lives. We will see all this happening before our eyes, but God will rescue us from His wrath. Take heart that after the end of this age, Jesus will rule the earth for 1,000 years, and Satan will not be found.
